Miss Lockhart Alexander was the daughter of Claud Alexander of Newton (1724-1772) and Joanna, daughter of Alexander Cuninghame, of Craigends. The sitter married her cousin Claud Neilson. Her sister, Wilhelmina, was the inspiration for Robert Burns' poem The Lass of Ballochmyle, their brother, Claud Alexander (b.1752), having purchased the estate of Ballochmyle, Ayrshire in 1783.
