Lot Essay

Between 1894 and 1896, Portia Geach attended painting class at the National Gallery School after which she travelled to India, Europe and Egypt studying at the Royal Academy Schools when she reached London. She exhibited rarely throughout her career but her known works are experimental murals. In 1965 the annual Portia Geach Memorial Award for a portrait by a woman artist was inaugurated.
