Munnings spent his childhood at Mendham Mill on the river Waveney which divides Norfolk from Suffolk. After completing a six year apprenticeship with Page Bros. in Norwich betwen 1893-99 (see lots 120-121) he returned to set up a studio there. 'During those years, Mendham Village, its corners, by-lanes and meadows were my painting grounds' (An Artist's Life, Bungay, 1950, p. 166).
