ST VERONICA WITH THE HOLY FACE, painting on leather
[Burgundy, early 15th century]
A simplified figure of St Veronica holding up the veil imprinted with the image of Christ after she had wiped his face as He carried the cross on the way to Calvary. 93 x 36mm (creasing and small pigment losses).
The ducal house of Burgundy had a particular devotion to the Holy Face, and Margaret of Bavaria, wife of Duke John the Fearless, fostered a cult of St Veronica. The saint was invoked against sudden death and, after the assassination of her husband in 1419, Margaret added Veronicas to her manuscripts. They were of exactly the type of the present image, painted on leather and glued or sewn into the manuscripts: M. Two 'Veronicas', images of the Holy Face, tempera and burnished gold on vellum. Presumably for devotional use, to be regarded at recitation of the prayer to the Holy Face, Salve Santa Facies or as religious souvenirs. 68 x 65mm and 25 x 25mm (small pigment losses). (3)
