Lieutenant Thomas J. Walker was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1863 but educated back in the United Kingdom, being apprenticed to the New Zealand Shipping Company as a 2nd Mate direct from Worcester Nautical Callege. Appointed a 3rd Grade Officer in the Royal Indian Marine in 1884, he qualified for a two-clasp India General Service Medal for services in Burma aboard the Sir William Peel, Clive and Jaboona, gaining advancement to 1st Grade Officer in 1888. Just under a decade later, as a Lieutenant, he was aboard the Troopship Warren Hastings when she was wrecked off St. Phillipe in January 1897. Appointed to the Clive in September 1899, Walker went on to serve off South Africa and China, finally coming ashore in May 1904, after a career spanning 20 years.
