Sir Patrick Ford was a great patron and collector of Scottish art. Sir John Lavery stayed at his home, Westerdunes, whilst painting the North Berwick golf course series and he became a close friend of the Colourists, in particular Cadell. It was through his generosity that Cadell was able to undertake a painting trip to Venice of several months' duration.
