1939 HALL OF FAME AUTOGRAPHED BASEBALL
An official American League baseball signed by all eleven Hall of Fame inductees attending the Baseball Hall of Fame opening ceremonies in 1939. Tris Speaker, on the sweet spot, one side panel featuring Grover Cleveland Alexander, George Sisler and Walter Johnson. Another panel signed by Eddie Collins, Cy Young and Connie Mack; a third panel with the signature of Larry Lajoie. The last panel has the three signatures of Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth and Honus Wagner. All signatures are large and bold. The ball was obtained from Marvin Owen, Chicago White Sox (player) who was invited to play in 1939 for the American League as part of a Centennial Celebration to be held in connection with the Cooperstown opening on June 12, 1939. The ball is accompanied by an invitation to Owen from American League President William Harridge. On the envelope for that letter Owen wrote, "This letter is proof I was at Cooperstown, NY as a player for this game-Signatures on baseball are charter members of Hall of Fame-All were at the game." There is a very light coat of clear shellac which has not yellowed or darkened with age. A rare signed baseball in excellent condition.
