INDENTLieutenant Colonel Robert Francis Cantwell, joined the Frontier Armed, Mounted Police as a Trooper, January 1877 and served during the Galeka and Gaika compaigns of that year and of 1878; during the Zulu campaign of 1879, he was present at the taking of Moirosi's Mountain in November; by this time the F.A.M.P. was reorganised and took over the famous old Imperial title 'Cape Mounted Riflemen' which became probably the finest corps of Colonial light cavalry recruited in South Africa; as Regimental Sergeant Major, he accompanied his newly formed corps to Basutoland, July 1880; promoted Lieutenant 1881; Captain Adjutant and Musketry Instructor, 1883; served with the C.M.R. during Lieut. Colonel Dalgety's defence of Wepener, 9th-24th April, 1900; on the night of the 10th April, after the most determined Boer attack of the Siege, Captain Cantwell assumed command of the regiment from the severely wounded Major Waring and retained it until Wepener was relieved on the 24th; (Mentioned in Lieut. Colonel Dalgety's report of 29th April, 1900 and subsequently in Lord Robert's Despatch of 2nd April, 1901; Brevet Lieut. Colonel 1901); Lieut. Colonel 1901; on the cessation of hostilities he was appointed Chief Staff Officer to General Sir E. Y. Brabant; represented the Cape Colonial Forces at the Coronation, 1902; was seconded as Senior Staff Officer Cape Colonial Forces January, 1903
