A rare early 18th-Century boxwood nocturnal for both Bears,
unsigned, the 8in. (20.3cm.) long index arm attached via a hollow octagonal square-back brass bolt to the outer date scale, the volvelle with two indexes marked LB and GB, and graduated in hours 1-12 (x2) and days 1-29, the date scale graduated in hours 1-12 (x2) and days of the month in ten day divisions, with abbreviated names of the months, the reverse with central star motif, surrounded by two further scales, one for each Bear, the handle with central heart motif cut out, inscribed either side BOTH and BEARS, terminating in a club motif -- 10¾in. (27.5cm.) long
