THE COLLECTION OF LADY HILDA INGRAM Born in New York in 1891, Hilda Vivian Lake moved to London in the early 1900s where she attended Queens Gate and Roedean. In 1908 she married Sir Herbert Ingram Bt, grandson of Herbert Ingram, founder of The Illustrated London News. The Ingrams travelled widely and from the 1930s to 1950s Hilda wrote extensively for magazines such as Country Life and Connoisseur on subjects ranging from architecture to gardening and collecting. Her taste in books concentrated on fine bindings and she astutely acquired many examples from the renowned Mortimer L. Schiff sales. Her collection also includes copies from the libraries of A.A. Renouard, David Garrick and Beckford-Hamilton, in addition to bindings with the arms of Charles II, George I and Louis XIV, amongst others. Lady Ingram published several novels, including the innovative 23 Years which was written entirely in dialogue. She died in 1968, and the collection is sold by descent.
