1545, POSSIBLY WORKSHOP OF GUIDO DURANTINO
Painted with the transformation of Proserpine's attendants into Sirens, with two figures jumping from a wooded cliff on the left, the sea below strewn with women in the water by two Sirens, two dolphins and a shell, a city in the distance at the foot of mountains, within an ochre band rim, the reverse inscribed and dated fierse sirene le donne gientile · 1545 · (one side broken through and repaired, small repaired rim chip)

Lot Essay

A dish with a related scene of Proserpine's attendants turning into sirens, with similar trees around the coastline, is illustrated by Carola Fiocco et al., Majoliques Italiennes du Musée des Arts Décoratifs de Lyon, Collection Gillet (Dijon, 2001), pp. 243-244, no. 162.
