Alexandra Nicolayevna was the youngest daughter of Tsar Nicholas I, Emperor of Russia (1796-1855) and his consort, Princess Charlotte of Prussia (1798-1860). Alexandra was celebrated at court for her beauty, wit and musical talents. She was married to Prince Frederick William of Hesse (1820-1864) in 1844. Alexandra was incapable of assuming her new position beside her husband in Hesse, however, because she contracted acute tuberculosis shortly before the wedding. Greatly weakened by the illness, Alexandra died after giving birth the same year.
