Wang Chuan was born in 1953 in Chengdu, Sichuan. He graduated from the Chinese Ink Painting department of the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. His oil painting Goodbye, Little Path is an iconic masterpiece that belongs to the Scars Movement period. In mid-1980s, Wang Chuan departed from his successful career as a painter of realism and pursued a new path of avant-garde painting. He participated in the China Avant-Garde Exhibition hosted by the National Art Museum of China in Beijing in the 1989. Beliefs (Lot 147) was finished two years after the landmark China Avant-Garde Exhibition. After the dramatic changes and upheavals in society, this painting shows a remarkable clarity and illumination in the palette. The geometric shapes are assertive and clearly defined. This works demonstrates the artist's devotion to the arts and his spirit of perseverance in life.
