The antique prototype of the Borghese Vase, upon which the present lot is based, and which is now in the Louvre, was first recorded in Rome in 1594 on the site of what had been the garden of the classical historian Sallust. It was in the Villa Borghese from 1645 until 1807, when it was transferred by Napoleon to Paris.
