A strong selection of works in this summer's evening sale offers a chronicle of the development of avant-garde art over the last fifty years.
An exceptional group of CoBrA works from the collection of Lars Ulrich expresses the immediate aftermath of the Second World War. Important paintings by Post-War masters of abstraction such as Mark Rothko and Yves Klein contrast with an outstanding group of Warhols such as rare portraits of James Cagney and Troy Donahue, the latter believed to be the first silkscreen painting that the artist ever made.
Auschnitt, an important painting by Gerhard Richter about the nature of paint and painting itself, highlights a section of important works from the 1970s. Also featured is a striking metallic blue progression sculpture by Donald Judd.
Among the stars of the 1980s are two important works by Jean-Michel Basquiat created during the artist's creative highpoint in 1982.
In addition to a large and important painting by Anselm Kiefer, the 1990s offer the first ever piece to come to auction by the celebrated video artist Bill Viola; an important installation by Wim Delvoye; and major works by the German photographers Andreas Gursky and Thomas Struth.
Join Katharine Burton, Specialist, Contemporary & Post-War Art Department, London, as she presents an audio tour of some of the highlights of this sale.
