Christie's superb offerings this spring are a fine mix of Abstract Expressionist and Pop masterpieces.

The Abstract Expressionist section is highlighted by Arshile Gorky's Year After Year, 1947 (lot 37A); Mark Rothko's No. 9 (White and Black on Wine), 1958 (lot 13); Franz Kline's Zinc Door, 1961 (lot 21); and a monumental abstract by Gerhard Richter appropriately titled Abstraktes Bild, 1987 (lot 44).

Of special note is Mark Rothko's Brown and Blacks in Reds painted in 1957 (lot 35), the star in the renowned Seagram Collection and bought in 1958 by Phyllis Lambert, architect and member of the Bronfman family (majority owners of Joseph E. Seagram and Sons). This remarkable work used to hang in the executive reception area on the fifth floor of the Seagram building in New York, a celebrated masterpiece of modern architecture by Mies van der Rohe and Philip Johnson.

Another highlight from the Seagram Collection is The Accident by Larry Rivers (1923-2002). Painted in 1957, the work presents a fresh vision of the agitated mosaic of urban life revolving around successive scenes on a New York street (lot 41). Read more about the Seagram Collection >

Masterpieces by Andy Warhol form the centerpiece of the Pop section such as Marlon, 1966 (lot 16); Dance Diagram, 1962 (lot 23); Campbell's Soup Can (Pepper Pot), 1962 (lot 5); and Self Portrait (lot 28).

Also featured are works from the collections of Marieluise Hessel, the Estate of Burton Tremaine Jr. and several important American and European private collectors.
