Contemporary Art/Day
Sale 1180
14 November 2001, 2:00 pm
20 Rockefeller Plaza, New York
Among the features in the day sale this season is a John Currin painting entitled Flag. In the late 80's and early 90's Currin created a series of paintings based on pictures derived from young girls’ high school yearbook photographs. The young girl in Flag projects an incredible serenity and Currin's painterly sophistication is made visible.
Another highlight is a Lisa Yuskavage painting, Little Northview, which is the most important Yuskavage painting to be offered at auction. The painting incorporates everything one would look for in the artist’s work; it is provocative and disturbing but also seductive and sexy, seeming to embrace and undermine traditional painting.
Other highlights include a sublime photograph by Thomas Struth from his Paradise series; a full figured Basquiat painting from 1984; and a Matthew Barney triptych from Cremaster 2: Drone Ensemble series.
Collectors are also provided with the opportunity to bid on a series of Robert Gober drawings; Bruce Nauman sculpture including Study for Animal Pyramid, 1989, and Studies for Holograms, 1970; and Donald Judd's Desk and Chairs, 1988, a signed prototype for the chair and desk sets that were produced in various woods.
