Laurence Stephen Lowry, R.A. (1887-1976) Going to Work, 1944 Pencil Estimate: £15,000-20,000 |
British Art on Paper Sale 6457 7 June 2001, 2:30 pm 8 King Street, St. James's, London Leading the sale is a magnificent Turner watercolor, A Swiss Mountain Scene traditionally identified as the Domleschg Valley in the Grisons of Switzerland, c. 1843. John Flaxman's album of pen and ink drawings for his 'Compositions from the Works and Days and Theogony of Hesiod' is a further highlight. Head studies by John Frederick Lewis, Christopher Wynne Nevinson, Henry Moore and Augustus John are interspersed among sweeping landscapes by artists as diverse as Thomas Gainsborough, Graham Sutherland, John Sell Cotman and Rex Whistler. A rare group of designs for the House of Parliament by Sir Charles Barry provides an interesting visual detour to the masterpieces by Richard Wilson, Paul Sandby, Walter Langley, and Sir Alfred Munnings. A strong group of L.S. Lowry drawings contrast with a delightful collection of Myles Birket Foster watercolors, some of the finest appearing at auction in recent years.
