Important British and Irish Art Sale 6460 13 June 2001, 7:00 pm 8 King Street, St. James's, London Some of the most important names in British painting cover this sale of works from the early 17th century to the 1950s. The sale features Sir Anthony Van Dyck's beautiful Portrait of Lady Elizabeth Thimbleby, c. 1635/7; portraits by Daniel Gardner, Sir Francis Grant, Frederick Lord Leighton, and Edwin Harris. A particularly exciting discovery is a Thomas Gainsborough drawing of the artist's dogs, Tristram and Fox. An equestrian theme runs through works by John Frederick Herring, Sen., Thomas Woodward, and Sir Alfred Munnings, with the latter's Changing Horses showing one of Munning's most glamorous portraits of his wife. Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, Sir Edward John Poynter and George Frederic Watts, also in the sale, are some of the most important names in Pre-Raphaelite painting. Edmund Blair Leighton's The Accolade, his masterpiece in the medieval mode, and two romantic works by Frank Cadogan Cowper take the sale into the post-Victorian age.
