The greenhouses at Duke Farms were built between 1909 and 1917 to provide fruit and vegetables for the estate, and were later used for orchid, plant and flower propagation.
In 1958, Doris Duke began a six-year process of designing and transforming the greenhouses into elaborate display gardens. She traveled the globe in search of specimens and ideas to complete the gardens, which were first opened to the public in 1964.
The display gardens are a magnificent floral showcase comprising eleven gardens from diverse cultures and regions of the world.
Italian, English, Colonial, Chinese, Japanese and Indo-Persian designs are juxtaposed next to desert, semi-tropical and tropical environments. The gardens are exquisitely maintained and presented at their peak, all under an acre of glass.
Today, visitors can tour the greenhouse display gardens and the 700-acre park at the heart of the estate, September through May. For information, please call +1 908 722 3700.
The property is owned and supported by the Duke Farms Foundation, which maintains the 2,700-acre estate as a complex cultural landscape with an array of natural, horticultural and historic resources.
