Furniture, Silver & Porcelain from Longleat
Sale 6594
13 June 2002, 7:00 pm
8 King Street, St. James's, London

The furniture in this sale provides a fascinating insight into the collecting tastes of various generations of the Thynne family.

There is the late George II mahogany furniture commissioned by the 1st Marquess of Bath; the pair of French lacquer cabinets by the Jacob brothers; the exquisite Louis XVI parquetry table by Carlin and the Thomire mantel clock bought by the 2nd Marquess, the quintessential Regency collector; the North Italian ivory-inlaid commode by Piffetti; the Roentgen cylinder bureau and the Louis XV ormolu-mounted porcelain vase collected by the 4th Marquess.

These items, together with the Gillows furniture commissioned by both Beriah Botfield Senior and Junior, offer today's collectors rare opportunities to acquire exquisite pieces from this great English country house.

The silver section includes pieces acquired from Beriah Botfield and also features a fascinating group of commissions from the goldsmith Edward Wakelin and his successors, his son John, William Taylor, John Parker and Robert Garrard. The company ledgers, now preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum, list the original descriptions, weights and cost of the silver items.

The exceptional porcelains showcase the work of some of the greatest porcelain factories, including Sèvres, Chelsea and Meissen, and are highlighted by the extraordinary white Meissen animals made in the 1730s for the Japanese Palace in Dresden, of which the fox and the turkey are two rare and stunningly beautiful examples.

Tour some of the sale highlights in a video gallery talk with Lord Hindlip, Chairman, Christie's.
