Pictures & Watercolors from Longleat
Sale 6682
14 June 2002, 10:30 am
8 King Street, St. James's, London

The remarkable collection of Old Master Paintings features works by many of the leading Dutch artists from the Golden Age. There are four van Goyens from the 1640s, two classic river landscapes by Salomon van Ruysdael, masterpieces by Johannes Lingelbach and Jan van Huysum, and key portraits by Gerard Ter Borch and Thomas de Keyser.

Also included are fascinating pictures painted in England in the early 18th century, amongst which an extraordinary pair of large bird pictures by Francis Barlow and a set of six still lifes painted as overdoors by the Pseudo Roestraten.

The watercolors section offers a delightful collection of 112 drawings of the Isle of Wight by Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827), Samuel Howitt (1756-1822) and other artists from Rowlandson's circle. Fifty-one of these drawings are from an unpublished tour of 1791, some of which depict the artist and his friends on the ferry or visiting various inns on the island. Being kept away from the light, the watercolors have remained remarkably fresh.
