拍卖简介

The second part of the sale will be dedicated solely to the American photographer Berenice Abbott, to whom Kaspar M. Fleischmann devoted an exhibition at his gallery in 1979. This monographic sale brings together 38 views of New York dating from the 1930s. Returning to New York in 1929 after spending a decade in Paris, during which time she became acquainted with Eugène Atget and the work of the Surrealists, Abbott set aside portraiture to focus on the urban landscape in a state of metamorphosis. In 1935, having obtained the support of the Federal Art Project, Abbott launched the Changing New York series which ran until 1939 and documented the transformation of the city as skyscrapers gradually replaced old buildings. Graphic views of Manhattan such as Murray Hill Hotel From Park Avenue, 40th Street, Manhattan, 1935 and Midtown Manhattan, 1932, will be presented alongside images of an old and almost rural Brooklyn. The powerful influence of Atget, whose work Abbott rediscovered and helped promote, can be seen in a series of photos of shop windows including Sumner Healy’s Antique Shop, Third Avenue, New York, 1936 and A & P Store Window, circa 1930.
