This July, Christie’s will present the third edition of our Old Masters to Modern sale, with paintings, drawings, watercolours and sculpture from seven centuries. Crossing traditional collecting categories, the sale presents a curated selection of works hailing from every major Western School and at a broad range of price points. A wide selection of lots will be sold without reserve, as indicated on our sale page, with estimates starting at around £1,000.
The Old Master paintings group is distinguished by high-quality northern works of all genres, including a tiny roundel by Lucas van Valckenborch, a musical still life by Jan Vermeulen and a charming landscape by David Teniers II. They are complemented by several Italian highlights, including an early Madonna and Child restituted to the heirs of Dr. James von Bleichröder (1859-1937). The most celebrated names of the British school are represented in paintings and drawings by Gainsborough, Constable, Lawrence, Romney and Turner, alongside sporting paintings by Wootton, Ferneley, Herring and Munnings.
Amongst the nineteenth-century European works is a Breton landscape by Corot, and the Victorian paintings are led by Henry Herbert La Thangue’s In the Orchards. In sculpture, a group of large-scale nineteenth-century marbles is led by a spectacular group after Carlo Finelli, The Dancing Hours, alongside Renaissance bronzes.
A highlight of the sale is a selection of works from the exceptional collection of Albert Zuckerman (1931-2026). Collected, lived with and loved by the renowned New York literary agent over three decades, the group comprises Pre-Raphaelite and Symbolist works, alongside Victorian and 19th Century European Art. Having founded his now-legendary literary agency Writers House in 1973, and shared his wisdom in Writing the Blockbuster Novel in 1994, Zuckerman helped many internationally celebrated authors from Dan Brown, and Ken Follett, to Stephen Hawking.
Paintings, drawings and sculpture from the estates of several further eminent collectors will be offered, including Lord Hindlip, the Hon. Patrick and Lady Amabel Lindsay, Dr. Catherine Wills and Ambassador J. William Middendorf II.
