Post-War to Present is the premier platform for today’s leading artistic voices and celebrated figures of the post-war period. On 26 June, our London saleroom buzzed with energy for the live auction, which totalled £9,284,310. Victor Man’s enigmatic The Chandler led the sale, achieving over double its estimate at £705,600. David Hockney’s iPad painting, The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire in 2011 (twenty eleven) - 4 May, also soared above its estimate of £180,000–250,000 to reach £504,000. Other outstanding results included KAWS’ monumental sculptural work exploring the human desire to be held, which sold for £567,000, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye’s 8pm Zaragoza, realising £529,200, and works by Tracey Emin, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Raymond Pettibon, which all performed well above their estimates.
The auction series continued with our online auction, which closed on 3 July with a total of £1,247,904. Manolo Valdés’s bronze and iron sculpture, Amélie II, was the top lot and sold for £56,700. Other notable results included George Condo’s Mr. Misinformation at £52,920 and Sylvie Fleury’s Serie ELA 75/K (Plumpity... Plump) at £40,320 — both works surpassing their pre-sale estimates. Coinciding with the recent Gilbert & George DEATH HOPE LIFE FEAR exhibition, their monumental work Brotherhood realised £44,100 in the online sale.
This sale series was part of the London Summer Season, a programme of auctions, exhibitions and activities celebrating the dynamism and creativity that London inspires.
