4o (198 x 140 mm). Large folding plate of the catafalque by JUAN FRANCISCO ROSA (reinforced along folds on verso). (Title cropped along lower and foremargins, some occasional pale spotting.) Contemporary reddish-brown morocco, covers with wide borders and a Maltese cross within a cartouche beneath a crown, spine gilt, edges gilt. Provenance: Maestro Martin (inkstamp on title with Maltese cross, possibly bound for him, his? notes on front free endpaper).

The plate illustrates the prodigious catafalque erected at the funeral of DIEGO MORCILLO RUBIO DE AUNON (1642-1730) in Lima. Morcillo was a Spanish bishop in Peru and twice the viceroy of the colony. Among his political accomplishments were a great increase in royal revenues from the colony, and the repulse of the English pirates on the coast. He died in Lima in 1730 and was interred in the crypt of the cathedral. Heredia III:3935; Palau 45648; Salvá 207 (lacking the plate).
