A commentary on Nazm al-Suluk (The Poem of the Progress), the celebrated work on Sufism by the Arab poet Ibn al-Farid (d. 1235 AD), Arabic manuscript on paper, 215ff. as numbered plus 2 fly-leaves, each folio with 17ll. of tiny black naskh, with red comma markers, text within gold, black and blue rules, catchwords, the opening folio with finely illuminated headpiece, some later red division rules, colophon signed and dated, in fine gilt brown and red morroco binding with flap, generally very clean

Dawud al-Qaysari was an Egyptian sufi master known for his commentaries on Ibn al-'Arabi's works and most notably on Ibn al-Farid's two poetic masterpieces: the khamriyya (the Wine Ode) and the present Nizm al-Suluk. This poem, containing 760 verses, is also called Al-Ta'iyya al-kubra as it rhymes in the letter t. This sufi work, composed in Arabic is considered a unique masterpiece [...] and occupied the position of a classic among Sufis (R.A. Nicholson, The Encyclopaedia of Islam, Vol.III, London, 1986, p. 761-2)
