L'art américain est comme les entreprises amé ricaines, toujours à essayer de conquérir des espaces, vous savez. Comme les expressionnistes abstraits, essayant de prendre l'espace des surréalistes, un peu comme quelqu'un qui les chasserait à coups de pied.
Les Américains en général doivent gagner, obtenir un meilleur prix, non? Alors je suis un exemple car je n'agis pas comme ça. Je me sens tout fait à l'aise dans la rébellion. Je me sens bien. Je n'ai à me soucier de l'opinion de personne. Nous avons assez d'argent pour vivre grâce à nos économies. Nous sommes complètement en sécurité pour autant que je sache et je connais de jeunes marchands d'art passionnés. Qu'est-ce que vous en dites ? Dans vingt ans je serai mort, mais en attendant je dois peindre quelque chose.'
American art is like American corporations, always trying to grab the spaces, you know? Abstract Expressionnists, sort of grabbing the space from the Surrealists, or somebody, you know, kicking them out of the room.
Americans usually have to win, get a higher price, you know? So I'm an example of not doing that. I feel completely relaxed in rebellion. I feel great; I don't have to worry about anybody's opinion. We have enough money to live thanks to our thrift. We're absolutely safe as far as I know, and I have eager young art dealers. How about that? In twenty years I'll be dead, but in the meantime I get to paint anything.'
