ANNE-LOUIS GIRODET DE ROUCY-TRIOSON, A MYTHOLOGICAL SCENE, GRAPHITE, PEN AND BLACK INK, GREY AND BROWN WASH, HEIGHTENED WITH WHITE

This sensuous couple underneath a veil depicts the mythological couple of the goddess Aurora and the hunter Cephalus (see Ovid’s Metamorphoses, book VII). The composition recalls another drawing of the same subject by Girodet for the series Les Amours des Dieux, published in 1826 (formerly in the collection of Richard L. Feigen, New York; see Girodet 1767-1824, exhib. cat., Paris, Musée du Louvre, and other venues, 2005-2007, no. 129, ill.).

Ce couple enlacé couvert par un voile renvoie au sujet mythologique de la déesse Aurore et du chasseur Céphale (Métamorphoses d’Ovide, livre VII). La composition rappelle un autre dessin de même iconographie réalisé par Girodet pour la série Les Amours des Dieux publié en 1826 (autrefois dans la collection de Richard L. Feigen, New York ; voir Girodet 1767-1824, cat. exp., Paris, Musée du Louvre, et autres lieux, 2005-2007, pp. 458-459, n° 129).
