Lord John Pelham-Clinton was the fourth son of Henry Pelham-Clinton, 2nd Duke of Newcastle (1720-1794). The Duke was known for his country estate, Clumber Park, in Nottinghamshire, and the eponymous spaniels he bred there, seen here with his youngest son. A pastel portrait by Hoare of John's older brother, Henry Fiennes Pelham-Clinton, Earl of Lincoln (1750-1778) is now at Nottingham University (N. Jeffares, Dictionary of pastellists, online edition, J.395.1388).

We are grateful to Neil Jeffares for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.
