The study reproduces, at almost the same size, Raphael drawing in the Devonshire collection at Chatsworth (inv. 728; see P. Joannides, The Drawings of Raphael, Oxford, 1983, no. 320, ill.). The long and interesting provenance of the drawing, which can be traced back to the early 17th Century, is documented by a series of annotations and collector’s marks on the backing sheet.
