L’œuvre représente vraisemblablement le cimetière des Templiers dans la colonie allemande de Jérusalem. « Le long de la partie arrière du cimetière, un muret bas se détache en une bande bleue. The present work likely depicts the Templer Cemetery in the German colony of Jerusalem. "Running along the back of the cemetery a low wall registers as a strip of blue. A burst of warm yellow light catches the trunk of the tree second from the left and falls across a tomb behind, indicating that the sun is low in the sky. The symmetry of the avenue and its flanking tombs is offset by the luxuriant foliage of the trees, suggesting the renewal of life in a place of death." (R. Ormond and E. VII, p. 154) Almost devoid of human presence, the artist paints three figures, shrouded in black, almost abstracted, walking through the background, furthering the juxtaposition between life and death. Executed with Sargent's signature expressive brushwork and mastery of light, Jerusalem reflects the artist's fascination with the landscape and architecture discovered throughout his extensive travels.
The present work was initially owned by the artist's sister Violet, who presented it to London's Athenaeum Club, where her brother was a member.
