Among the most highly coveted timepieces in the world of vintage watch collecting, the Rolex Daytona has established itself as an undisputed icon. With its eye-catching black dial and silvered sunken subsidiary registers, the present timepiece is a particularly appealing example of reference 6239. It is further distinguished by its period-correct MK1 bezel, graduated to 200 units.
Reference 6239
The reference 6239 was the very first model of the celebrated Daytona series and succeeded the earlier reference 6238. Although it is thought to have been available in the US as early as 1963, the model's introduction in European catalogues in 1964 signaled a significant turning point in the development of Rolex chronographs.
The brand's first chronograph with a tachymeter scale engraved directly on the bezel, reference 6239 was made either in stainless steel, 14k gold, or 18k gold. This design innovation gave the watch a more technical and sporty appearance. The use of contrasting colors between the main dial and the subsidiary registers was another unique feature that improved readability.
Interestingly, the earliest dials of the model bore only the 'Cosmograph' designation, a name inspired by the fascination with space exploration during the early 1960s, such as on the present timepiece. Only in later models was the word 'Daytona' added to honor Rolex's connection to the renowned Daytona 500, which took place at the Daytona International Speedway and ultimately gave the model its enduring name.
