In its early years following the 1994 relaunch, A. Lange & Söhne distributed its watches primarily within German-speaking markets, expanding internationally to Italy, the United States, and Asia by the late 1990s. Japanese collectors, known for their precise tastes, felt that the Lange 1's original 38.5 mm case size was slightly large. In response, the manufacturer released the Little Lange 1 in 1998. It had a smaller 36.1 mm case and reference numbers starting with 111.xxx, which matched the 101.xxx designations of the main series.
Many of these watches were eventually distributed through German and Italian retailers, who absorbed the remaining stock, despite the fact that they were originally meant for the Japanese and Singaporean markets. Despite their refined proportions and aesthetic appeal, the models proved relatively difficult to sell at the time, likely contributing to the comparatively short production span of certain variants. By the early 2000s, the brand had discontinued most Little Lange 1 references, with the collection only returning in 2014 to mark A. Lange & Söhne’s 20th anniversary.
Little Lange 1
The Little Lange 1 retains all the defining characteristics of the iconic Lange 1 within a more compact format. Inspired by the historic digital clock of Dresden's Semper Opera House, its patent-protected signature outsize date continues to be a key component, providing outstanding legibility and a unique visual identity.
In contrast to the standard Lange 1, the Little Lange 1 omits the pusher at 10 o’clock, replacing it with a corrector integrated into the case for adjusting the date display. The watch is powered by the calibre L901.0, which was initially created for the larger Lange 1. Consequently, the movement generously fills the caseback, resulting in a visually appealing and well-proportioned presentation.
