The Vacheron Constantin reference 47101 occupies a pivotal position in the manufacture's modern history, marking the triumphant return of the classical manually wound chronograph at a time when such watches had largely disappeared from contemporary production. Introduced in 1989 and produced until the early 2000s, the reference reaffirmed Vacheron Constantin's commitment to the timeless design principles that had defined its celebrated mid-century chronographs: elegance, restraint, and uncompromising mechanical excellence.
Drawing direct inspiration from the revered chronographs of the 1940s, most notably the iconic reference 4178, the 47101 faithfully reinterprets these historic design codes in a contemporary form. Its elegant 36 mm. yellow gold case is distinguished by beautifully sculpted teardrop lugs, while the perfectly balanced bi-compax dial is framed by a finely graduated tachymeter scale, creating one of the most harmonious chronograph layouts of the modern era. The reference was produced in yellow gold, white gold, and platinum, paired with either a salmon or black guilloché dial. The present example is fitted with the highly attractive black guilloché dial, whose finely engraved surface produces a captivating rippling effect as it catches the light.
Powering the watch is the celebrated hand-wound calibre 1140, derived from the legendary Lemania 2310, one of the finest chronograph ébauches ever produced. Featuring a traditional column-wheel construction and finished to Vacheron Constantin's exacting standards, the movement exemplifies the highest level of Genevan watchmaking.
