François Boucher

François Boucher stands as one of the defining artists of 18th-century France. Renowned for his idyllic pastoral scenes, mythological subjects and intimate portraits, Boucher’s work epitomised the decorative flourish of the Rococo movement.

Born in Paris in 1703, Boucher trained under François Lemoyne. The artist quickly distinguished himself, winning the Prix de Rome in 1723. His subsequent years in Italy exposed him to the works of the Baroque masters, yet it was upon his return to France where he developed the lightness and fluidity that came to define his style.

By 1765, Boucher had been appointed First Painter to King Louis XV and Director of the Royal Academy, signalling his rise to prominence. A further key patron of the artist was Madame de Pompadour, for whom Boucher produced some of his most impressive works, including The Rising of the Sun and The Setting of the Sun (1752–1753).

The artist's compositions are characterised by their soft palettes, playful style and a heightened sense of artifice. He was particularly celebrated for his depiction of the female form in works such as The Toilette of Venus (1751) and Sleeping Diana, with the latter having sold at Christie's for USD$1.5 million in 2025.

Boucher’s pastoral scenes offered a theatrical, escapist vision of nature, shown in works such as Shepherd Piping to a Shepherdess (c.1747–1750) and The Interrupted Sleep (1750). Beyond painting, the artist’s work spanned altarpieces, drawings, porcelain and tapestry.

Boucher died in Paris in 1770, leaving behind a legacy which defined Rococo aesthetics. His influence extended across painting and the decorative arts, shaping the visual language of his time and reflecting both the refinement — and the excess — of ancien régime France.
