Born in the city of Duisburg in 1881, Lehmbruck later trained at the Düsseldorf Academy. During his time there, the artist developed a rigorous understanding of anatomy and form that underpinned his style. His early work took influence from Auguste Rodin, with the artist producing mostly naturalistic pieces during this period.
Between 1910 and 1914, Lehmbruck spent much of his time in Paris, where he encountered the avant-garde. Though he remained committed to the human form, he started to experiment with a more stylised approach, utilising elongated limbs and slender torsos in his sculptures. Rather than using pure abstraction, he distilled form to its essentials — some of the artist's most celebrated works were created during his time in Paris, including Standing Female Figure (1910), Kneeling Woman (1911) and Pensive Woman (1913).
During World War I, Lehmbruck worked as a paramedic at a military hospital in Berlin. This experience marked a profound shift in his outlook, with his later sculptures becoming increasingly sombre, reflecting a deepened sense of introspection. This stylistic change was also evident in his drawings and etchings, such as The Dead Man (1915).
At the end of 1916, Lehmbruck and his family moved to neutral Switzerland, where he created work critical of the war and its human cost. He returned to Berlin following the armistice, and in 1919, he was elected to the Prussian Academy of Arts.
Lehmbruck died later that year, aged 38. When the Nazis rose to power in the 1930s, Lehmbruck's art was denounced as ‘degenerate’, with some of his works destroyed. Today, his sculptures are displayed at the Lehmbruck Museum, which opened in 1964. Despite the brevity of his career, Lehmbruck’s oeuvre had a lasting impact on modern sculpture, reflecting the artist’s position as one of Germany’s most prominent Expressionist sculptors.
