拍賣簡介

Our upcoming sale is a jewel, with masterpieces both known and newly discovered, as well as historic collections. One of the masterpieces of this sale is a beautiful Fang head, once owned by the New Realist Arman. Two striking Punu masks from the South of Gabon – of which one is white and the other is black – are among the new discoveries being presented. Sculpted in the 19th century, this is a rare occasion to compare their diverging styles and symbolism in Punu society. The highlight of the sale will be an exceptional Dogon figure from the Tintam village, distinguishing itself with its strength and its height. Of great evocative power, with its hands raised in a gesture of supplication, this sculpture which probably belonged to Hélène Leloup, comes from the collection of the Brussels-based antiquarian Germaine de Brabant. Among the important works of art from the South Pacific is an extremely rare temple sculpture from the Fiji Islands, collected in 1863 by the missionary Thomas Baker, who is well known for being the last person to have been cannibalised in the Fiji islands. Fresh to the market, having been in Baker’s family’s collection for over a century, this sculpture with its geometrical lines and its unpolished surface evokes western occidental art and notably works by Picasso.
