Christie’s Paris célèbre le cinquantième anniversaire de la création du département des arts d’Afrique, d’Océanie et d’Amérique à travers une vente conçue comme un hommage à l’histoire de la spécialité. Fondé à Londres en 1976 par Hermione Waterfield, rapidement rejointe par William Fagg, ancien conservateur du British Museum pour les arts d’Afrique, le département a joué un rôle déterminant dans la structuration du marché international.
La sélection retrace les grandes étapes de cette histoire à travers des œuvres présentées dans des expositions devenues emblématiques, parmi lesquelles African Negro Art (1935), “Primitivism” in 20th Century Art au Museum of Modern Art (1984), Art of the Continent à la Royal Academy of Arts (1995) ou Visual Encounters à la Fondation Beyeler (2009).
