拍賣簡介

The British & European Art sale on 4 June celebrates a century of the avant-garde. The 19th century was marked by generations of artists rebelling against their predecessors and embracing a modernising age. From the Pre-Raphaelites, represented by Rossetti’s magnificent portrait of Mrs Charles Howell, to artists like Corot and Courbet from the Barbizon school in France who started the practice of painting en plein air. This in turn laid the foundations for Impressionism, a movement which soon swept the globe and inspired artists such as John Singer Sargent, Alfred Munnings and Laura Knight. As industry and innovation allowed for faster and further travel the world opened up to many artists. Orientalists such as Ludwig Deutsch followed the lure of the Middle East, and Scottish artists such as George Henry travelled as far as Japan.

The auction will be on view at Christie's King Street from 29 May – 4 June.
