Christie’s a le plaisir de présenter la vente The Hilde & Dieter Scharf Collection, Ode to African Sculpture, qui se tiendra à Paris le 16 juin prochain. Réunissant cinquante œuvres exceptionnelles, cette vente s’inscrit dans la continuité des grandes collections historiques d’art d’Afrique proposées par Christie’s ces dernières années.

Hilde et Dieter Scharf ont rassemblé, sur trois décennies, un ensemble rare qui rend hommage à la puissance créatrice des artistes africains. D’une grande richesse formelle et d’une diversité saisissante, les sculptures qu’ils ont choisies incarnent  l’essence même de la figuration dans les arts d’Afrique.

Petit-fils du grand collectionneur berlinois Otto Gerstenberg, Dieter Scharf a grandi dans un environnement imprégné d’art. Après avoir réuni, pendant près d’un quart de siècle, des œuvres symbolistes et surréalistes pour sa propre collection, sa première acquisition d’art d’Afrique marque un tournant. Elle l’initie à la découverte émerveillée d’un continent artistique méconnu. 

Avec discernement, curiosité et le soutien constant de son épouse Hilde, il se rapproche des plus grands marchands de son époque, explore une multitude de styles et constitue une collection aussi cohérente qu’exceptionnelle. Restée longtemps à l’écart du regard public, cette collection apparaît aujourd’hui comme une extension de l’univers esthétique que Dieter Scharf a patiemment bâti tout au long de sa vie de collectionneur.

À l’image des œuvres symbolistes et surréalistes qu’il affectionnait, ces sculptures africaines dialoguent avec l’invisible, l’inconnu et le pouvoir du rêve, tout en centrant leur langage autour de la figure humaine. L’art africain s’est ainsi imposé comme un prolongement naturel de la quête esthétique de Hilde et Dieter Scharf.

Over the course of three decades, Hilde and Dieter Scharf assembled a rare and deeply personal collection that pays tribute to the creative power of African artists. Rich in form and striking in diversity, the sculptures they chose embody the very essence of figuration in African art.

A grandson of renowned Berlin collector Otto Gerstenberg, Dieter Scharf was raised in a world steeped in art. Having collected Symbolist and Surrealism for his own collection for twenty-five years, his first acquisition of African art marked a turning point, an awe-struck discovery of an unfamiliar artistic continent.

With discernment, curiosity, and the unwavering support of his wife Hilde, he sought out the leading dealers of his time, explored a wide array of styles, and built a collection that is as coherent as it is exceptional.

Long kept away from public view, the collection now emerges as an extension of the aesthetic universe Scharf patiently constructed throughout his lifetime as a collector.

Much like the Symbolist and Surrealist works he admired, these African sculptures engage with the invisible, the unknown, and the power of dreams, while grounding their visual language in the human figure. African art thus became a natural continuation of Hilde and Dieter Scharf’s aesthetic journey.
