This sale comprises three collections: an important library from Lyon, rich in 16th century editions; a group of literature and illustrated books from the 16th to the 20th century, including this series of 16 gouaches by Schmied for his Chemin de croix, commissioned from the artist by Gaston Gradis, a collector from Bordeaux; and lastly the library of Geneva gallerist Jacques Benador, offering an overview of the 20th century illustrated book with works by Bellmer, Ernst, Giacometti, Miró and Picasso, among others. Highlights from the various owners section include two exceptional early printed books: a scientific work, De mineralibus by Albert le Grand, Padova, 1476, and this important Hebrew early printed book by the Grammarian David Kimhi, printed in Naples in 1490. The part of the sale dedicated to manuscripts includes L’Otage, given by Claudel to André Gide, and an unpublished series of love letters between Gabriele d’Annunzio and Sophie Jules-Brun, a young journalist of Romanian origin.
