Chinese calligraphy is renowned for its expressive brushwork and refined aesthetics, combining disciplined technique with artistic freedom. Created using only brush and ink, the art form has developed over millennia, with the earliest surviving Chinese script dating back over 3,000 years. Though closely tied to the evolution of Chinese characters, calligraphy transcends language through its rhythm, movement and flow, appealing even to those unable to read the text. Prominent Chinese calligraphers include historic artists like Zhao Zhiqian and Wang Duo, as well as modern masters such as C.C. Wang and Wang Dongling — in 2015, Christie’s sold cursive script calligraphy by Wang Duo for HK$19.2 million.
