The sitter (1652-1683) was the eldest son of Philip, 5th Earl of Pembroke and his second wife Catherine, daughter of William Villiers, 1st Bt., of Brockesby, Leicestershire. He succeeded his elder half-brother William, 6th Earl of Pembroke, as the 7th Earl, on the latter's death in 1674, and married Henrietta Mauricette, daughter of Guillaume de Penancoet, Count de Kerouaille, youngest sister of the Duchess of Portsmouth, in 1675. His daughter Charlotte married John, Lord Jeffreys, son of the Lord Chancellor. He was succeeded in the earldom by his younger brother Thomas.
