INNOCENT XI (Pope, r. 1676-89) -- Index librorum prohibitorum. Rome: Apostolic Camera Press, 1681.
8o (162 x 101 mm). CONTEMPORARY ROMAN BINDING BY GREGORIO AND GIOVANNI ANDREOLI FOR COSIMO III DE'MEDICI: gold-tooled red morocco, panelled sides, a floral tool at the angle, Medici coat-of arms in the center composed of small tools, the grand-ducal crown supported by two putti, spine decorated in compartments, marbled pastedowns, gilt edges, (slight wear to extremities of binding). Provenance: Cosimo III (1642-1723), Grand-Duke of Tuscany (binding) -- Bibliotheca Medicea Palatina (library-stamp) -- Cortlandt F. Bishop (bookplate) -- Oliver Henry Perkins (bookplate).
As the binding is Roman and not Florentine, the Medici arms composed and not impressed from a block, this is probably A PRESENTATION COPY from the Vatican to the Grand-Duke of Tuscany. The winged putti tools are found on other examples from the Vatican Bindery, which was operated by the Andreoli Brothers, a shop formerly called the Rospigliosi Bindery after one of its patrons; see Legatura Romana Barocca (1991) pl. XI. The Index was a much consulted catalogue in Florence at this date, as Cosimo's reign was characterized by considerable religious intolerance. BBB Wittockiana 6.
