Mattarnov, after Bartolomeo Tarsia, and 12 double-page engravings by Polianov, Sokolov, Katchalov, Wortmann, and Mattarnov after Schumacher. (Light marginal soiling.) 19th century cloth, gilt labels on upper sides, one of these numbered '1853' and perhaps referring to when the work entered the collection (soiled, small losses on spine and lower edge). Provenance: 'K.N.' (small red book label).
FIRST EDITION. THE VERY RARE FIRST PRINTING with the dedication to Anna Leopoldovna and with the frontispiece reading 'Petr I nachal, Anna sovershila' ('Peter I began, Anna accomplished'). Schumacher's book was published within a few weeks of the dramatic change of government in which Elizavet Petrovna seized power from Anna, regent of Russia during the infancy of her son Ivan VI. The frontispiece and dedication were both promptly changed as a result. This series of fine, large engravings show sections and perspectives of the Library and Gallery before the fire of 1747.
