A SMALL FAMILLE ROSE VASE, SIGNED BY WANG XIAOTANG

AFTERNOON SESSION - 2.00 PM THE RODEN FAMILY COLLECTION OF 20TH CENTURY PORCELAIN (LOTS 1152-1161 INCLUSIVE) Christie's are delighted to offer this exquisite collection of 20th century porcelain. The Roden family lived in Hong Kong for many years where they became interested in Chinese porcelain and ceramics. They started buying select pieces on summer visits to England and after visiting Peter Wain's summer UK exhibition Heavenly Pieces, An Exhibition of Chinese Porcelain of the Early 20th Century in May 1993 they started to focus on ceramics from the Republic and 20th Century. At the time, works of the 20th century were not as widely appreciated as today and they were amongst the vanguard of collectors in this area. They were confident that in the fullness of time the world would come to recognize the quality and importance of the best porcelain from this era and beyond. The Roden Family write: "We were guided by two collecting principles: firstly to find the best quality pieces which were to be found; secondly to pay special attention to the provenance of pieces. We feel that these principles have withstood the test of time. The collection has been enjoyed over decades by ourselves and our two daughters who were brought up surrounded by these wonderful objects. We do, however, feel that with the appreciation now shown for works from this period, that it is time to share the experience of our collection with others."

Two similar lots depicting the other two stories from the Si ai series were offered in Christie's South Kensington, 14 May 2010, lot 433 and lot 434. Wang Xiaotang (1885-1924) moved to Jingdezhen around 1909-1911 and within a few years had become an accomplished porcelain painter. The celebrated Wang Dafan (1888-1961) later became his pupil.
