Manjushri (Wenshu), the bodhisattva of Wisdom, is usually shown seated on a lion and is often depicted in a triad with the Buddha Shakyamuni and the bodhisattva Samantabhadra (Puxian), who is shown seated on an elephant.

Compare the pair of similarly modeled Dehua figures of Samantabhadra and Manjushri, bearing the seal of Xu Yunlin (1887-1940), sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 8 April 2013, lot 3196. See, also, the similar Dehua figure of Samantabhadra seated on an elephant, sold at Sotheby's New York, 20 March 2007, lot 774.
