The enamel is taken after the full length portrait of Queen Victoria by Franz Xaver Winterhalter painted in 1845 in the Royal Collection (Royal Collection Inventory no. 403054), see O. Miller, The Victorian Pictures in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen, Cambridge, 1992, no. 817. A closely comparable enamel of Queen Victoria, also after Winterhalter and signed and dated by Bell, 1864, is in the Royal Collection (Royal Collection Inventory no. 13964). Two further examples, one signed by Bell and dated 1853 and the other mounted in a bracelet are at Schloss Fasanerie. See V. Remington, Victorian Miniatures in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen, London, 2010 I, no. 19 and 20.
