HORAE, use of Le Mans. Paris: [Nicolas Hygman for] Simon Vostre, c.1515.

Book of Hours for the diocese of Le Mans, in a contemporary binding. This highly illustrated prayer book reuses cuts from several sources, including Pigouchet, Kerver, and Vérard—and three signed by Geoffroy Tory. It combines styles from France, Italy, and Germany in an effort to meet new tastes in book illustration. Not in Bohatta.

Octavo (187 x 114mm). Printed on paper. 124 leaves, with 9 additional blank rubricated leaves. Ruled in red. 21 large cuts, with anatomical man and full-page printer's device, 33 smaller cuts in text, each page within woodcut border with serial vignettes and elaborate ornamentation, illuminated initials on red and blue grounds. Contemporary blindstamped calf over wooden boards, a central plaque of Peter and Paul holding the Sudarium blocked on both sides, clasps in the shape of hands, gilt and gauffered edges (caps restored, corners showing); custom chemise and slipcase. Provenance: Lespinon family (notes dated 1551-2) – Jacques Lucas Bellisle, Evreux (inscription dated 1725).
